W. SUMMERS (English school engraver active in London in the second half of the 19th century) "The Finish" Original etching in aquatint from a subject by Henry Alken Junior (Ipswich 1810 - London 1892) published in London by McQueen on 1 April 1873. Beautiful first edition copy, masterfully printed in color on heavy paper and retouched with watercolor and tempera with shellac raises, with good margins beyond the imprint of the plate, uniformly burnished probably due to contact with the frame material , with two tears recomposed on the right and left sides, which do not affect the engraved part, clearly visible in the enlargement of the image, on the back old traces of gluing along all the edges, burnishing and pencil markings but overall, considering the remarkable dimensions, in excellent general condition. Under the title, in the center of the lower edge, the dry stamp of McQueen & Sons Tottenham Court Road London. Rara. This is the arrival of a race at Epsom, taken from the side of the Grand Stand towards the more open part of the Downs where many spectators found their place, some of whom came to the event in a carriage or on owned horses that can be seen on the background together with a large camp which is now called Hillside Enclosures and is an area dedicated to family entertainment and various side events.
